The Asia-Pacific region is driving much of the sector’s growth.
Revenues generated by mobile and tablet games quadrupled on Google Play, and doubled on iOS, in the fourth quarter of 2013, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to a study carried out by the firm International Data Corporation with App Annie .
“Total portable gaming spending in Asia-Pacific exceeded that of any other major world region last year,” said Lewis Ward, research director at IDC Gaming. “The Google Play ecosystem particularly benefited from a great regional boom in the installed base of smartphones and tablets in 2013, but the rise in living standards in countries in Asia-Pacific also generally supported gaming spending.” .
The three fastest growing games on the Apple App Store are, in order, Clash of clans (from Supercell), Puzzle & Dragons (GungHo Online Entertainment) and Candy Crush Saga (King). On Android, it’s Puzzle & Dragons who occupies the head of the podium, followed by Candy Crush Saga and Monster Taming for Kakao (by CJ Group).
“Although consumers have always spent on games than on other types of applications, more than 75% of application expenditure on iOS and Google Play combined comes from games” concludes Bertrand Schmitt, President of App Annie.
