Telecom Italia joins forces with Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa

Currently in difficulty, the historical Italian operator, whose debt amounts to nearly 29 billion euros, is about to proceed with the split of its fixed network.

This operation, relatively unique in Europe and indicative of a telecoms crisis, should be carried out with the help of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa.

Present in Italy since 2003, Hutchison Whampoa would indeed be ready to support Telecom Italia in exchange for a participation of at least 30% in its capital, specifies the daily Les Echos.

This transaction would thus allow the Italian operator to expand its activity outside its home market.
