Start-up of the day: Tiller Systems, management solution for restaurants

by bold-lichterman

Every day, Frenchweb highlights a young growing company to discover its strategy and development objectives.

Have you founded a growing company? Make yourself known!

Frenchweb invites you today to discover Tiller Systems, a French start-up, incubated at Essec Ventures and Startup42 (EPITA), which publishes a point of sale solution for restaurants via an iPad order-taking application and a web back office for monitoring and day-to-day management. More details with Dimitri Farber, co-founder.

Frenchweb: How did you get the idea for your company?

tiller-systems-2Dimitri Farber: Tiller Systems was born from the observation that restaurateurs spent a significant portion of their turnover on the acquisition of cash registers with which they were often not satisfied. We wanted to create a product that specifically addresses the needs of restaurateurs, by offering an intuitive, easy-to-install, and free application.

Our cash register application, TILL, is therefore a complete ecosystem of mobile cash register, available on iPad, which allows you to take orders, modify tables, manage stock and even make discounts.

What need are you responding to?

Today, restaurateurs spend an average of 4% of their turnover on cash register systems which are often expensive, not very intuitive, and do not specifically meet the needs of restaurateurs. Tiller Systems meets these different needs and develops TILL, the first cash register software created by and for catering professionals.

We have worked hand in hand with experts within the catering industry to offer a product that meets the very specific requirements of this environment, while maintaining the intuitiveness and ease of use that characterize our product.

Very simply, how do you make money?

Our business model revolves around two sources of revenue: registrations from restaurateurs who subscribe to the paid offer of our service and commissions from the customer relationship management system (CRM).

Who are your competitors?

Our main competitors can be divided into two main categories: so-called “classic” point of sale systems, for which software is inseparable from hardware; and so-called “mobile” systems.

What or which companies are you being compared to in error?

Thanks to our global ecosystem, we are often compared to other companies that offer similar products, but less comprehensive than our overall solution.

What was one of the first issues in your development, and how did you deal with it?

In the development of this type of product, the main difficulty consists in adapting the latest mobile technologies to the “business” issues of restaurateurs. Thanks to our knowledge of the market and our professional networks, we have defined the essential functions and uses for restaurateurs, allowing us to keep a functional and intuitive product, while offering a complete solution.

What is your main asset in this market?

We have created a real ecosystem that combines the latest technological innovations to allow restaurateurs to increase their sales while controlling their costs. This ecosystem is not limited to a simple cash register and allows restaurateurs to manage their establishment from A to Z thanks to all of our solutions.

Who is the personality you admire the most?

Amazon’s business and strategic aggressiveness can be frightening, but for his tenacity and the ability to believe in his ideas, even through thick and thin, Jeff Bezos is certainly worthy of admiration. Putting the customer at the heart of the company’s concerns and strategic decisions is a vision that we share with the founder of Amazon.
