The hour of rebirth has come for Samsung. After a disastrous year 2016 marked by the fiasco of the Galaxy Note 7, the smartphone that was to overshadow the iPhone 7, the South Korean manufacturer is preparing to launch the Galaxy S8 in the first half of 2017. Determined to strike strong, Samsung is expected to produce 10 million Galaxy S8s at first, according to information reported by the South Korean newspaper Electronic Times, who quotes anonymous sources close to the case. Production should be launched in March before marketing in April.
The hopes placed by Samsung in its new flagship smartphone are immense insofar as the setbacks of its Galaxy Note 7 have cost it dearly. In the third quarter of 2016, Samsung announced a 30% drop in operating profits. The operating profit of the mobile division of Samsung had even plummeted 98% between July and September last year, to 80.2 million euros. The South Korean manufacturer planned to sell 19 million units during the life cycle of its Galaxy Note 7. According to analysts, this industrial and commercial disaster could cost Samsung up to $ 10 billion.
The New York start-up Namely, which is developing a SaaS solution for HR databases, has completed a funding round of $ 50 million. The transaction was led by Altimeter Capital and Scale Venture Partners. The historic investors Sequoia Capital, Matrix Partners and True Ventures also participated in this funding round. This investment brings to 157.8 million dollars the total amount raised by the company since its creation.
Founded in 2012 by Matt straz, Namely targets mid-sized businesses, which typically have between 100 and 1,000 employees. The start-up claims more than 650 customers and more than $ 4 billion in salaries per year processed on its platform. This investment should allow Namely to develop new products to improve its service offering.
Apple kicks off 2017 under the best auspices. The statistics communicated by the firm headed by Tim cook at the beginning of the year thus report a record day on January 1 for the App Store. On New Year’s Day 2017, nearly $ 240 million were spent by “Apple Addict” on the App Store.
In addition, Apple has revealed to have paid a total of 20 billion dollars to developers throughout the year 2016, an increase of 40% compared to 2015. Since the launch of the App Store in 2008, 60 billion of dollars were paid to developers.
