Oxalide: “Amazon Web Service alone represents more than 75% of the cloud market”
Oxalide will integrate Amazon Web Service into its outsourcing offers
Maxime Kurkdjian is Managing Director at Oxalide, a company specializing in hosting and application outsourcing in the cloud or on dedicated infrastructures. He announced the integration of Amazon Web Service into its outsourcing service.
Frenchweb: You will integrate Amazon Web Service into your outsourcing offer. What is it exactly?
Maxime Kurkdjian: An Agile outsourcing offer that meets the new constraints of web application development and infrastructure deployment.
The craze for the Amazon Cloud is no longer to be proven. The AWS offering is currently the most innovative. It alone represents more than 75% of the cloud market with a growth of 50%. But whatever the size of the market today, what’s important is the trend. It is clear that the cloud is generating great enthusiasm and that it is the new model of consumption of IT services. In a very dynamic digital world, the old mode of consumption is doomed to become marginal in the years to come because it has become the cause of a heavy general governance of IT services.
But, the adoption of a public cloud and AWS must be framed. The technical (and legal) issues are important and few companies are sufficiently equipped to calmly tackle these challenges in a production environment: There are real points of vigilance such as invoicing and the budget, the legal framework, SLA guarantees, the technical architecture or specific operating mechanism of AWS.
Our customers see us as a true partner in the management of their production. Beyond our infrastructure, we are regularly called upon for our expertise combining innovation and rigor. Using AWS in production is a real departure from standard infrastructures. It requires a good knowledge of the Amazon offer, systems and web application environments to really benefit from its benefits.
Our support offering aims to operate critical web platforms in AWS. Especially in the first steps to use AWS where it is necessary to equip yourself, to adapt your software architecture, its applications and its data to its operating principles.
Private cloud, public cloud and hybrid … how can the use of each type of cloud be relevant?
Oxalide has always been careful to choose the most suitable ingredients to guarantee the quality of the web service for its customers. Each raw material has its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to know their limits to adapt them to the needs of the project.
Our advisory mission takes on its full meaning here, and our independence from Cloud and infrastructure providers is essential to guarantee our clients impartial advice.
- The private cloud is the natural evolution of the way infrastructure is made available in business. All CIOs will evolve towards this model which allows them to deliver not only infrastructure faster, but also faster deployment of services to their users. The private cloud offers dedicated power with strong isolation from the outside;
- The public cloud meanwhile, meets the need for elasticity, the constraint of deploying remote infrastructures, testing infrastructure / PoC, etc. But, the adoption of the public cloud requires being in accordance with the technical, financial and specific contractual agreements. It also raises the question of governance, or even of compliance;
- The hybrid cloud combines these two raw materials. It is, for example, adapted as part of an internationalization project with a central infrastructure in France which centralizes sensitive data and with, in target markets, an AWS infrastructure.
It is very easy to deploy infrastructure all over the world while maintaining governance in France. Traditional methods would have required costly deployment and long delays. This makes it easier to test a new market.
How much do you estimate the cloud market is and what are the data security issues?
Many companies “cloud” their activity and soon the restaurants “at will” will rename themselves “Cloud Food Provider”. The market is vast: according to IDC France, the cloud market in France would exceed 3 billion euros in 2014.
With a complex legal and technical framework, it is difficult to find your way around the issue of confidentiality and data security. Exacerbated by the NSA and the Patriot Act, prejudices are now strong in infrastructure projects. However, proper use of the hybrid cloud opens up several partitioning scenarios in data management. It is therefore possible to embrace the problem rather than close oneself to the benefits of the public cloud.
In addition to the technical issue, there is notably an evolution of the contractual constraints imposed by our clients in, in particular, the governance and management of data confidentiality. Rather than a restrictive approach, the data management policy must go beyond security or not security and rather be framing to leave a controlled agility to the operational teams so that they can innovate.
But, we must always keep in mind that highly shared hosting such as in the public cloud brings many benefits, but mechanically implies strong constraints and risk pooling.
Different legal frameworks for data: but a common solution: in the coming months, the subject of compliance could become a major topic. Today, the design and application of data privacy is not the same on both sides of the Atlantic. However, there are solutions to take advantage of each depending on the sensitivity of the data.
Application security: the poor relation of business: por SaaS services, security is a major issue, they are subject or themselves submit to significant security constraints as part of the production of their web service. By nature more exposed than traditional editors, they are often more advanced in terms of security compared to “on premise” applications.
Data security is linked to the legal framework, to application security, but also to the management of the human factor in data protection. A high level of requirement is often expensive to implement or even too complex! Here again, the situation is not so simple, the cloud is not synonymous with a low level of security, but the subject must be part of the elements to be addressed in the context of the choice of solutions in the cloud (SaaS / Paas / Iaas)
Entering the cloud revolution requires thought, embracing this revolution requires knowing the conditions and prerequisites necessary to enjoy the benefits without compromising on data security.
