In 2016, the mobile application economy generated $ 1.3 trillion in revenue, driven by app stores, advertising and m-commerce, according to a recent App Annie study. A total of 3.4 billion people used a mobile application during the year, and the time spent using these applications exceeded 1.6 trillion hours.

Within 4 years, the revenues generated by this sector should be multiplied by 3.9, to reach 6,300 billion dollars. It is the very strong growth expected in the m-commerce segment – 39% per year on average – which will be the main driver of the sector by 2021. The revenue generated by integrated advertising should increase by 23%. per year, and app store revenues of 18%.

In terms of usage, the time spent using mobile applications will increase by 18% per year, to exceed 3,500 billion hours in 2021. At the same time, the number of application users will practically double, to 6.3 billion people.

And the growth seen in terms of users and time spent will also translate into annual spend per user. Where mobile users will spend an average of $ 602 via applications in 2017, they will spend more than 1,000 in 2021. Note, it is in Japan that users spend the most per hour, with a total of $ 13.98 spent in 2016. In 2021, this figure will reach an average of $ 18.42.
