Artificial intelligence whets the appetite of web giants, like Microsoft. The Redmond IT firm has announced the creation of a new subsidiary dedicated to artificial intelligence and research. This division will be led by Harry Shum, executive vice president, technology and research, at Microsoft.
The IT group cannot afford to miss out on such a technology as the artificial intelligence market will represent a volume of $ 5 billion by 2020, against less than $ 500 million at currently, according to experts at Markets and Markets. In addition, the research firm Gartner estimates that there will be 6 billion connected objects in circulation by 2018.
Composed of employees from several Microsoft entities, such as Cortana and Big, this new branch should allow an increasing integration of artificial intelligence into the products of the firm headed by Satya Nadella.
As part of this team, Microsoft plans to develop the world’s most powerful computer in terms of artificial intelligence with the support of Azure. The American group also intends to offer a more prominent place to artificial intelligence in its applications, including Skype, Office 365, Pix and Cortana. Microsoft is also positioning itself on bots with the development of its Bot Framework platform.

The creation of this Microsoft team comes in the wake of the announcement of a partnership between major American IT groups. Used to engaging in a fierce struggle in all areas of digital technology, the giants of the Web have decided to join forces in the development of artificial intelligence. On September 28, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM announced their partnership to promote technologies emanating from artificial intelligence.
Baptized “Partnership on Artificial Intelligence”, This partnership takes the form of a non-profit organization to define good practices and raise public awareness around artificial intelligence. Within the framework of this cooperation, the five groups undertake to invest material, financial and human resources. Francesca Rossi (IBM), Yann LeCun (Facebook), Mustafa Suleyman (Google DeepMind) and Eric Horvitz (Microsoft) are among the members of this new organization.
For the time being, Apple remains the big absent from this collaboration between the heavyweights of the Web. However, discussions would have been initiated with the Cupertino company, according to Eric Horvitz, quoted by the Guardian, to integrate it into this partnership.
