Mi MIX, the incredible smartphone imagined by Philippe Starck for the Chinese Xiaomi
- The screen of Xiaomi’s new smartphone covers 91.3% of the front panel of the device.
- This “concept phone” will only be marketed in China from November 4th.
- Apple is reportedly working on a glass iPhone to enlarge the surface of its front screen.
Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi presented the Mi MIX, a smartphone created by French designer Philippe Starck. It has the particularity of being equipped with a 6.4-inch screen which occupies almost the entire surface of the device. The latter thus covers 91.3% of the front of the device. For comparison, the screen of the latest iPhone 7 Plus covers only 67.7% of the front surface.
Xiaomi’s “concept phone” thus fulfills the fantasy of smartphone manufacturers by almost completely eliminating the edges of the device. For this, Xiaomi found itself obliged to design a curved screen that hugs the rounded contours of the smartphone. The manufacturer has also developed technologies capable of detecting accidental touch manipulation, especially at the edge of the screen.
To achieve this, Xiaomi replaced the proximity sensor with ultrasonic technology and the speaker disappeared in favor of a device that uses metal to generate sound. As for the front camera, popular for selfies, it was placed at the bottom of the front surface.
The Mi MIX is made entirely of ceramic, including the side buttons of the device. “Ceramic is a very, very, very old material, but it is also the most modern because it is very resistant and warm.», Explains Philippe Starck in a video which presents the smartphone.
A step ahead of the next iPhone
In addition to its innovative design, the Mi MIX also incorporates a Snapdragon 821 processor, like the Google Pixel, the latest smartphone presented by the subsidiary of Alphabet, as well as 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. A second version includes 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The “concept phone” will only be marketed in China from November 4 at 470 euros for the 128 GB version and 540 euros for the 256 GB model. No release date is planned for Europe.
By launching the Mi MIX on the market, Xiaomi is ahead of Apple in terms of design. The Cupertino company would indeed work on a glass iPhone to enlarge the surface of its front screen. In early October, Sharp also unveiled the Corner R smartphone which incorporates IGZO LCD technology to experiment with saving space on the front of the device with the removal of borders.
