[Made in New York] Homeis, New York TechDay, SmartCities New-York, Ethereal Summit …
From the start-up Homeis to the agenda of Tech events of the month, an overview of the New York digital ecosystem with Othilie Bieuville, FrenchWeb correspondent in New York.
Ran Harnover, CEO Co-founder
INTERVIEW // Founded in New York and Tel Aviv in 2017, Homeis is a digital platform that allows people born abroad to come together in cultural communities.
- What is the concept of Homeis?
We created Homeis to help people like us: people who were born in one country and then moved to another. Some call them “expats”, others “immigrants”, we prefer to call them “born abroad”.
We believe that the life of someone born abroad is complicated and that the place of belonging to a community in their life can be the difference between success and failure. We want to empower these communities as well as give tools to organize information and relationships. That’s why we created Homeis.
Homeis is therefore founded on the idea that members of a “tribe” who share the same culture, the same childhood, the same sense of humor and the same language tend to have more trust in each other. This is why they need to have their community by their side. This will help them make better decisions and obtain the right recommendations, which will ultimately facilitate their assimilation within the group and society.
- What makes Homeis a unique cultural sharing and regrouping solution? What makes it different from other social networks?
Homeis’ mission is to organize information as well as the offer of services in a more efficient way so as to create a complete ecosystem. The massive use of Facebook or Whatsapp undoubtedly makes them competitors. However, we are not in direct competition. We believe that Facebook and Whatsapp are not ideally positioned to implement such a community system. This is only the beginning for Homeis of course…
- How did Homeis start? How does this idea reflect your story?
We decided to launch the concept with three different communities: Israeli, French and Indian (which will be launched later this year). As for the French community, I fell in love with it from day one. I have been many times and in many places in France and each time I have loved it. When I started to take an interest in the French community in New York, I immediately understood: pride, love of culture, food, loyalty of language… It all seemed natural to me. and familiar. I then saw the growth of French Tech in New York, all of which echoed my experience as an Israeli entrepreneur in New York. I then felt a real need for a community and a pride in the product that we launched with many initial partners.
- Can you tell us about your experience before Homeis?
I launched 5min Media in 2007. Basically, it was a tutorial portal that has developed into an aggregator of tens of thousands of videos on many themes. 5min is an intermediary: The videos are made by other people and then distributed on other sites like Answers.com or Dailymotion. I then sold 5min to the AOL group that I joined in 2010 and whose video section I managed until 2014. After leaving AOL, I took care of Bkstg, a platform founded by entrepreneurs tech and music to connect artists and their fans in a new way.
- What is your business model?
At the moment, we are focusing on the services offered to the consumer rather than the business side. There is a financial issue that goes hand in hand with immigration so if people born abroad choose to join our community, we could find a non-intrusive way to monetize the services rendered by the matchmaking or inclusion. in the community.
