NextEV - NioBaidu, which publishes the main search engine in China, announced that it had participated in a roundtable of the start-up NextEV, which builds electric vehicles. According to local media, the operation is worth $ 600 million. Founded in 2014 by William Li, also at the origin of Bitauto.com, NextEV is supported by the Chinese giant Tencent, which notably develops the WeChat messaging application, and the Hillhouse Capital fund.

By entering the electric car segment, Baidu seeks to diversify its business, mainly based on advertising and Internet research, to face competition from Alibaba and Tencent, Baidu’s main competitors in Asia. In addition, the Chinese group intends to boost its income. Baidu posted sales of $ 10.2 billion last year, up 6.3% for the year as a whole. In contrast, the group’s annual net profit was almost divided by three, to $ 1.7 billion.
