The society Acme Packet relied on several data and statistics to publish an infographic (taken over by Mashable) retracing how the internet and mobile media impact the Olympic Games as a whole.

We note that 2012 will be the first year in which journalists will use IP applications (like whats’app) to share information on games. The organizers of the 2012 Olympics are on their own restrict spectators on their 3G equipment at Olympic venues due to interference issues with emergency services.

This year, 80 metro stations will offer free wi-fi during games, 1 billion people are expected to receive results and follow events via digital devices, global mobile traffic could increase by 211%. The operating cost for the Olympics, estimated this year at $ 14 billion, would be enough to cover more than 10.5 billion hours of Skype calls.

Finally, Acme makes some forecasts for the Rio Olympics in 2016. He estimates that there will be more than 10 billion connected mobile devices for these games. There could also be more mobile than inhabitants since the company expects an average of 1.4 mobile devices per person. Tablets, on the other hand, represent 10% of global mobile data traffic.
