How Jack Ma made Alibaba a web giant

On the occasion of the special China week, Frenchweb invites you to rediscover the documentary Crocodile in the Yangsé by Porter Erisman, produced in 2012. The film tells the story of the group’s beginnings Ali Baba, from 1999 to 2009, with its president and founder Jack Ma. At the time, the American Porter Erisman was also vice-president of the group.

Jack Ma discovered the Internet during a trip to the United States in the mid-90s. Back in China, Ma Yun, whose real name was, realizes that there is a hole he can slip into. In 1994 the entrepreneur launched “China Pages”, a Chinese business directory. The site is not working. While the company did not take off, he decided to launch into e-commerce in 1999 in Hanghzou, the capital of the Chinese province of Zhejiang, with Alibaba, an electronic commerce site. During the first years, Jack Ma’s team had only one idea in mind, that of competing with the American eBay.

I made “Crocodile in the Yangsé” because I felt I had witnessed an inspiring story and I was in a unique position to share it with others.»Says the director. This docu-thesis has the interest of showing Alibaba’s difficult years, before becoming a world leader. It also shows the birth of a giant.
