by bold-lichterman

Telecom operators, e-merchants, advertising players: who are really the most dynamic players in the digital ecosystem in 2017? This is the question that wanted to answer FrenchWeb, with the second edition of its ranking FrenchWeb 500.

In 2016, the publication of the first ranking of the 500 French Tech companies made it possible to highlight the characteristics of the sector. The predominance of historical players at the top of the ranking, the emergence of new players under the impetus of successful entrepreneurs who have been converted into investors and start-up mentors, or even difficulties for companies to find a place internationally: so many characteristic elements of Tech in 2016. What about a year later?

3 telecom operators in the Top 5

First observation, at the top of the ranking comes the company Dassault Systèmes. Beyond its financial performance (more than 3 billion euros in turnover in 2016, with profitability close to 15%), the software publisher stands out for its growth, which has been stable over the years.

The Top 5 of the ranking is once again occupied by historical telecom operators. Free, Orange and Bouygues Telecom, which was able to return to profitability in 2016, thus arrive respectively at 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in the ranking.

81.5 billion euros in cumulative revenue

Another observation is that e-merchants such as vente-privee.com or Showroomprivé, ranked in the Top 10 of the ranking, are consolidating their position as key players in the sector.

Companies with very profitable models such as LeBonCoin (8th) or SeLoger (11th) also appear at the top of the ranking this year. Finally, companies like Blablacar (13th) or Voyage Privé (15th) stand out for their development potential.

More generally, the cumulative turnover of the companies in the ranking is close to 81.5 billion euros in 2016. Almost a quarter of companies (22%) have a growth rate of between 50% and 100% in 2016, and 12% of them saw their turnover increase from 100% to 200% between 2015 and 2016. Another strong statistic, these 500 Tech companies employ nearly 265,500 people in total.
