Exclusive: Moodstocks acquires Modaclic to scan fashion products
Frenchweb: Seven years after the creation of Moodstocks, an object recognition application via mobile, you announce the integration of Modaclic, a platform that lists clothing items from magazines to buy them. How did you meet each-other ?
Denis Brulé (president of Moodstocks): Moodstocks was based on the bet that the camera would become at least as important as the keyboard as the preferred interface of input, thanks to its simplicity. For 7 years, we have concretely made it possible for mobile developers to very easily integrate a high-performance image search engine into their mobile applications.
We met Modaclic last March, as part of the launch of the Overlay mobile app. This is a new product from Moodstocks which allows readers in particular to buy in augmented reality the products presented in fashion magazines. The complementarity with the Modaclic teams appeared obvious to us: very technophile DNA on the side of Moodstocks, and very professional on the side of Modaclic.
How are you going to work together? What’s your strategy?
We want to make Overlay the benchmark mobile application for purchasing products in print, with a global ambition. We are taking advantage of our presence in France to launch into this market, but all contacts have already been made across the Atlantic, where we travel very regularly.
In this context, Perrine, founder of the Modaclic site, becomes the face of Overlay, with the primary responsibility of making the application known and downloaded to our target audience. Moodstocks teams are available to provide support to develop the product and ensure content referencing.
Fnac, the Grand Palais, L’Occitane en Provence or even Leroy Merlin are using your solution… What is your business model, today and in the future?
All the players you mention are customers of our white label solution, which has already attracted more than 6,500 developers around the world, 80% of which are outside France. We have also just launched new very disruptive prices on the market (with unlimited scans, from 89 euros per month) which we believe will allow us to multiply the developer community by 10.
Regarding the Overlay app, we work with a per-page SEO model. It is greatly appreciated by our customers, because it fits perfectly into the practices of traditional print players. It also allows total cost control, without incidental costs linked for example to the management of an IT project. Note that it is possible to integrate Overlay in gray mark in an existing app.
