The market for tablets reached the record of 52.5 million units sold in the fourth quarter of 2012. This is in any case what IDC reveals in its study ” Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker“, Which adds that the latter increased by 74.3% between the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2012, and by 75.3% over the year.
Apple sold a total of 22.9M units in the fourth quarter of 2012, an increase of 48.1% in one year. Its market share, however, fell for the second quarter in a row, dropping to 43.6% against 46.4% in the last quarter.
This decrease is explained by the success of its competitor Samsung, which has benefited from an increase of 263% in one year. The latter shipped nearly 8M Android devices in the quarter. It holds 15.1% of the market.
Finally, suppliers Amazon and Barnes and Noble are benefiting from a slight increase in their market share thanks to the holiday season, with 11.5% and 1.9% respectively in Q4 2012.
